The core idea
Active recall means producing before looking
Active recall is a low-stakes attempt to bring information to mind without seeing the answer. You might explain a concept on a blank page, answer a short question, complete a problem, sketch a process, or turn over a flashcard only after committing to a response.
The important boundary is simple: the source stays closed during the attempt. Rereading, highlighting, and copying can support initial learning, but they do not show whether you can retrieve the idea when the page is no longer helping.

Retrieval is useful because it is both practice and diagnosis. In experiments using educational prose, Roediger and Karpicke found better delayed retention after retrieval practice than after repeated study. Karpicke and Blunt also found advantages for meaningful learning and inference with science texts.

Write prompts that ask for meaning
“Do I know this?” is a feeling check, not a retrieval prompt. Better prompts ask you to produce something that can be inspected: an explanation, ordered list, contrast, diagram, worked step, example, or claim supported with evidence.
Review the causes.

Look over the formula.

Read the definition again.

An effortful answer is not automatically an accurate answer. Compare your attempt with a trusted source, worked solution, mark scheme, or teacher feedback. Research on testing with feedback shows why the check matters: feedback can strengthen correct responses and reduce the chance that an incorrect alternative survives into a later test.
Underline the parts your first attempt produced accurately and clearly.
Rewrite any mistaken relationship, step, date, term, or assumption in one clean sentence.

Return after a gap
Use today’s gap to plan the next attempt
One successful answer is a snapshot, not permanent mastery. The broad evidence review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated both practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility techniques. A practical routine combines them: retrieve now, repair the gap, and return after enough time has passed that the answer is no longer sitting in short-term awareness.
These intervals are simple planning suggestions, not universal learning rules. Adjust for difficulty, assessment date, and prior knowledge.

Is active recall the same as taking a test?
Active recall uses the same core action—retrieving information without seeing the answer—but it is usually low-stakes practice. Its purpose is to strengthen learning and reveal gaps, not to produce a grade.
Does rereading count as active recall?
Not while the source stays open. Rereading can help you check and repair an answer after a retrieval attempt, but the recall step requires producing the idea before looking.
What should I do if my mind goes blank?
Shrink the prompt, write any related idea you can retrieve, then check the source and try again after a short delay. A blank attempt is useful evidence that the cue or material needs another pass.
